He went as far as he could, which was only to University of Idaho, obtained a journalism degree and set out in search of unknown things that nobody wanted to look at. Carl quickly found out that this did not make him very many friends. He liked to dig up old relationships that the local governments would like to keep quiet and occasionally picked a lock when he hit a dead end. He had yet to be criminally charged, but his editors didn't like it.
There had been a semi-steady job doing local pieces for the Denver Post until he had tried to submit a story about mysteries in a local lake that his editor had said was "more suited to the tabloids" than his paper. Now Carl was somewhat adrift looking for his next endeavor.
