    The Mineshaft Empty The Mineshaft

    Post  Keeper Wed Jan 11, 2012 5:34 pm

    The leadway into the mine was illuminated by halogen lamps and followed a well traveled route. The walls were well picked, with only the rare quartz providing any sort of shine. The researcher from Sinai led Niall down the pathway easily, talking while he walked. "So we are now down about six hundred feet. We found the orbs down here, just up ahead. They were up in a cairn of some sort, like hikers used to leave -- three orbs with a larger fourth set on top of it. We would have left it there, but the orbs were so abnormal that we had to check them out. Here we are, zero point." He pointed at a small white x on the floor. Around it, there was a a few small shards of obsidian, leading forward to a dropshaft with a pulley-run elevator.

    Niall followed the man down the path, barely hearing what he said. His mind was still on Rebekah. The prick in the suit definitely gave him the creeps too, and if he had actually tried anything with Rebekah Niall would have gone Limerick City on him, but the fact remained that he hadn't. He'd been weird, but had technically done nothing. So what was the big deal? He sighed. Regardless, he'd definitely have to apologize to Rebekah once he got back to town; he admittedly hadn't handled the situation well, and he hated fighting with her.

    He started paying more attention to the researcher as they got further into the mine. It really was gorgeous even without the interest from the orbs - the striations in the rock were absolutely beautiful. It was obviously mined out and abandoned, but still geologically breathtaking. He'd have to see if he could work out a field trip up here or something for one of his classes. The kids would love it.

    His ears pricked up at something the man in front of him said. A cairn? That definitely wasn't something that would have occurred naturally. For not the first time, the idea flickered across Niall's mind that the whole thing was a hoax cooked up to make the mineshaft some sort of tourist trap, but...he just couldn't believe it somehow. He was convinced of the fact that however the orbs had gotten there, the people at the site had had nothing to do with it. He'd felt that way ever since that weird rush he'd gotten from touching the orb in the trailer.

    He knelt down before the X and picked up one of the obsidian shards, pulling out his hand lens to examine it (Geology check). "These weren't mentioned previously," he said. "Shards are a form I'm much more used to seeing obsidian in. And there's never been anything out of the ordinary found here before? Geologically speaking, I mean?"

    [[Geology passed.]]
    "The shards seemed normal. There wasn't anything really worthwhile about pointing them out, mines generate a lot of rock cross-contamination. And while there have been a few anomalies here and there, nothing quite matched up to this." Time passed differently down in the mine, unaware of the lowering of the sun and rise of the moon as Niall inspected the mine. A small walkie at the mans side went off loudly in a burst of noise.

    This is groundfloor, we have an Officer Crenshaw here to speak with mister Curran. When you're finished, please send him up to the Hill trailer. Officer says he can wait.

    The researcher paused, looking at Niall with a new wariness. "You have a visitor upstairs, sir. When you're done."
    ======================================================

    Up above, officer Crenshaw sat in the trailer, sipping at his cheap coffee. He had a list of notes on his pad, idly going over them while he waited for his guest. Wouldn't be too far fetched that an outsider might come to a small town, thinking that they wouldn't catch on.

    Hmm. The shards did seem completely normal, other than the fact that obsidian didn't belong in this area at all. Although the mine was extremely deep - who was to say that there wasn't a layer of obsidian somewhere down there? Although the question remained of how it would get up this far in the first place, as well as how it would have been formed into the orbs. This was becoming more and more of a mystery the more he learned about it.

    Niall continued investigating until he heard the blast of static, followed by his name. A low, sick feeling began in the pit of his stomach. A policeman wanted to see him? He'd never so much as gotten a parking citation in his life. He was always acutely aware of the fact that this was not his country, and somewhere deep inside of him he'd always feared deportation. He loved Ireland, it was his home, but he also loved Rebekah. He had a life here.

    So what was going on? Why would an officer want to speak to him? He swallowed, nodded to the man, and began his ascent back to the surface.
